Additional information:
Akaan Shakki and Tunturi-Lapin Shakki are organizing the Finnish School Team Chess Championship in 2026 with the permission of the Finnish Chess Federation. The Chess Federation will decide on any international representations. The results of the competition will be submitted to the national rating system. No player license is required for the Finnish School Team Championship.
School teams are eligible to participate. For grades 1–6, the team consists of 4 players plus a maximum of 1 substitute; for middle schools and high schools, the team consists of 3 players plus a maximum of 1 substitute. Substitutes may be used without a specific reason; the team is always filled from the bottom up, i.e., the substitute always plays at the lowest board. The use of a substitute must be announced before the start of the round.
The team entry fee (45 euros) must be paid to Akaan Shakin’s account FI28 5472 0420 0157 92 no later than Tuesday, May 19. The participating team(s) must be explicitly mentioned in the payment reference field. Payment of the entry fee in cash at the venue and late registration are possible, but in such cases the entry fee is 50 euros per team. If the information does not fit in the message field, it can be sent by email to Ossi Kuparinen, ossikuparinen(at)gmail.com. In this case, please note in the message field that the information has been submitted via email.
The divisions are:
- Grades 1–3 and preschoolers affiliated with a school
- Grades 4–6
- Grades 7–9
- High schools and secondary schools. Folk high school programs for high school-aged students (under 20) are considered equivalent to secondary schools.
The chief judge of the competition has the right to adjust the thinking time and the number of rounds if a five-round competition is not feasible based on the number of teams. Divisions may be combined if necessary.
The top three teams in each division will be awarded national championship medals. In the event of a tie, medals will be awarded in accordance with the national championship competition regulations.
Team members must be students at the same school and grade level. If preschool education is provided as part of the school’s operations, preschoolers may play on a team for grades 1–3. Students in grades 1–3 may play on a team for grades 4–6. In schools where elementary and middle school are combined, a team’s eligibility to play in the aforementioned divisions is based on the students’ ages.
The game follows the rules of rapid chess: no score sheet is required; upon the first illegal move completed, the referee grants the opponent of the player who committed the error one minute of extra time. If the same player commits a second illegal move, they lose the game. However, the game is a draw if the opponent cannot checkmate the player who made the mistake’s king with any legal sequence of moves.
