Further information:
Akaan Shakki and Tunturi-Lapin Shakki will organise a Finnish Championship for school teams in 2025 with the permission of the Finnish Chess Federation. The Chess Federation will decide on possible international representations. The results of the competition will be submitted to the national SELO-calculation. No player's licence is required for the school team championship.
School teams can participate. The team size is 4 players + up to 1 substitute for grades 1-6 and 3 players + up to 1 substitute for secondary schools and post-secondary schools. A substitute may be used for no special reason, the team is always completed from the bottom, i.e. the substitute always plays on the lowest table. The use of a substitute player must be announced before the start of the round.
The team entry fee (45 EUR) must be paid to Akaa Shak account FI28 5472 0420 0157 92 by Tuesday 20 May at the latest. Payment of the entry fee in cash at the venue and late registration are possible, but in this case the entry fee is 50 euros per team. If the information does not fit in the message box, it can be sent by e-mail to Ossi Kuparinen, ossikuparinen(at)gmail.com. In this case, the message field must indicate that the information has been submitted by e-mail.
The series are:
- Grades 1-3 and pre-school children in school.
- Grades 4-6
- Grades 7-9
- upper secondary schools and secondary schools. For pupils of secondary school age (under 20 years), community colleges are treated as secondary schools.
The chief judge of the competition has the right to adjust the time of the deliberations and the number of rounds if the five-round competition is not suitable on the basis of the number of teams. Series may be combined if necessary.
The three best teams in each series will be awarded the medals of the Finnish Championships. In tie-breaks, the medals will be compared with the Finnish Championship medals.
The top three teams in each category will be awarded the medals. In the tie-break, the medals will be compared according to the rules of the Finnish Championship, with the team score being the first tie-breaker and the game score the second. No replays will be played.
Team players must be from the same school and school level. If pre-school education is provided as part of a school, pre-school pupils may play in a team in grades 1 to 3. Students in grades 1-3 may play on a team in grades 4-6. In schools where primary and secondary schools are combined, the eligibility of a team to play in these divisions is based on the age of the pupils.
The game will follow the rules of rapid chess: no minutes need be kept, at the first completed illegal move the referee will give the offending player an additional minute. If the same player commits a second illegal move, he loses the game. However, the game is a draw if the opponent cannot checkmate the king of the offending player with any legal set of moves.
